The EU AI Act

The European Union is poised to adopt the world's first comprehensive legislation to regulate AI, the EU AI Act, categorizing AI technologies according to risk levels from 'unacceptable' to high, medium, and low.

Pending final approvals and endorsement by the European Council, this groundbreaking regulation aims to ensure AI systems are safe, transparent, traceable, non-discriminatory, and environmentally friendly, while prohibiting certain high-risk AI applications and ensuring compliance with European copyright laws.

Meanwhile, the US has adopted a more sector-specific approach with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developing a voluntary Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework, focusing on the trustworthy and responsible development and use of AI systems. This indicates a more decentralized approach compared to the EU's comprehensive legislative efforts.

Will America begin to align more closely with Europe's precautionary and holistic approach to AI regulation?
